From 12:30 until 1:00 buy a bag from the Friends and fill it with books, movies or puzzles for just one dollar. A great way to stock up for your winter reading.

“Interesting Aspects of the Dakota Uprising” Sunday, Sept. 30 2 PM.  Community Room, 617 6^th Ave, Howard Lake MN.  Independent historian and author Curtis Dahlin will draw material from his numerous books to present information on the US-Dakota War of 1862  in Minnesota. Many Minnesotans know little about the events that took place 150 years ago. Dahlin will fill in many of those blanks.  He will have his books available for sale at this event.

While not directly related to the 1862 events, Ed Claessen will present information about the 1863 Dustin Massacre which occurred just west of what is now Howard Lake.

Join us Saturday, February 18 from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Howard Lake Public Library for a special event to celebrate Martha Speaks and Reading to Dogs in the Library. Share a book with your favorite pooch, enjoy crafts and activities, and register for free door prizes! Drawings will be held throughout the event to give away Martha Speaks books and videos.  Come share the fun!

The Friends of the Howard Lake Library will host a book signing for local authors Ed & Sue Claessen.  This event will be held Sunday, November 6th at 2 PM at the St. Mary’s Parish Center in Waverly, MN.  The Claessen’s book, “Making Tracks: C.L. Best and the Caterpillar Tractor Co.” is the result of over five years of effort.

Refreshments will be served by the Friends. “Making Tracks” will be available for purchase at the event and the authors will custom sign any copies.

The Friends have kept the price the same as last year–$3 each with a maximum of $10 per family.  The painter will receive a pumpkin, paint, cookies and KoolAid and the parents will have a unique hand-painted pumpkin and a paint-free house. Even though the paint is water-based, old painting clothes are suggested.

Family and friends are invited to watch the artists at work. Coffee will be available.

Award winning children’s author Jan Zita Grover will be in Howard Lake on February 12 and she will talk about being a writer and writing about dogs.   Her award-winning book, “A Home For Dakota” is based on actual events about Dog # 241 born in a puppy mill and  shows how caring people and a loving home transforms that puppy.

This event will be held on Saturday, February 12 at the Howard Lake Community Room.  It starts at 10:30 AM and will end at  12:30 PM.  There will be time with the author, some craft activities and light snacks.   Parents are reminded to stay with their children for this event.
